Grief Of Emerald: It all turns to ashes
04/03/13 || sincan
A Swedish version of Dimmu Borgir, I guess, since it was ages ago I listened at something the Norwegian circus put out.
Well this is some competent music, no doubt, but it doesn’t grab my attention that much actually. Some people tend to love “symphonic” keyboard sounds, I usually don’t. I think that symphonic additions, as in with real instruments, would fit pretty fucken awesome if incorporated in the right way, creating more power, drama and whatnot.
The usual keyboard thing usually makes me think about the, little too old, fan wearing a washed-out Nightwish shirt, some black eyeliner, a young boy’s haircut (black of corpse) and the mandatory baggy life-metal trousers with straps, fun and an anal plugged included. This doesn’t have to mean that the band sucks, just some of the fans. You know, these kids moving around alone or in groups thinking they are Lucifer’s offspring and the darkest thing on earth since they own Marilyn Manson’s biography.
So to cut the crap and speak in a clear and objective way, this is some good shit if you are into the symphonic black metal thing, for sure. If you, like me, have troubles to appreciate it I guess this is no exception. I guess this can be something for you who doesn’t like black metal that much as well, since it’s pretty easy accessible and the production is pretty “good” and not that grim.
If I should highlight a track here it must be the fifth, Cage of pain, which always grabs my attention with its slower and more sing-a-long friendlier chorus. It makes me think of a Dark Funeral and Naglfar hybrid thing.
Oh, and I’m pretty fucking sure that this is better than the newer stuff from the Norwegian band with band members wearing Halloween suits and squid-hats.
